The Opposition Guide: Oldham Athletic

15 March 2016

A Look At Tonight's Opponents

Blackpool face Oldham Athletic for the second time inside a month this evening, as both teams chase a vital three points in the battle to stay up.

The fixture between the two sides at Bloomfield Road in February ended in stalemate, while just a point separates them in the League One table.

John Sheridan is back for another stint as Oldham Athletic manager, having replaced David Dunn in January.

The 51-year-old, who made more than 140 league appearances as a midfielder at Boundary Park, was appointed Newport boss back in October and won five of his games in charge.

Sheridan, who first managed Oldham in 2006, guided Chesterfield to promotion in 2011 and steered Plymouth Argyle to the play-offs last season.

The Latics' seven-match unbeaten run in League One came to an end at Sheffield United on Saturday, as The Blades recorded a 3-0 victory.

Prior to that Oldham had won three and drawn four fixtures to go within three points of safety.

Holding two games in hand on several teams around them, the match against Blackpool is one that was rearranged from February.

Rested for the game against Sheffield United on Saturday, captain Liam Kelly is expected to return to the starting line-up for the match tonight.

The subject of transfer interest back in January, the 26-year-old has established himself as a real fans’ favourite at Boundary Park.

The tough tackling midfielder, a signing from Bristol City in 2014, has made 32 appearances this season and scored four goals.
