Bowyer Delighted With Victory Against Tough Opposition

27 September 2016

Manager Reflects On 3-1 Win

Gary Bowyer was delighted with the way his side handled 'an outstanding Portsmouth team', eventually running out 3-1 winners at Bloomfield Road tonight.

The manager, who watched Kelvin Mellor, Brad Potts and Kyle Vassell get on the score-sheet, credited his players for going toe-to-toe with the visitors and coming out with the right result.

Speaking post-match, here's what he had to say...

A good result against tough opposition

It was a tough night. They're an outstanding team Portsmouth and Paul Cook has done a tremendous job with them, they play the game the right way and it's hard work. We knew it was going to be a tough, tough game for us and it didn't disappoint. It was a proper game.

We expected them to come flying because they had a great win at the weekend but fair play to our players, they stood up to it and went toe-to-toe with them.

Three different goalscorers.

We've not scored enough goals but we're delighted they got shared around today. It's about time we scored from a set-play and we're fortunate that Kelvin has got on the end of one, he was very brave and it was a great delivery from Jack Payne.

Building on constructive criticism from Crewe.

We spoke at length yesterday, we had two sessions in the video room with them. Whilst it was a good point on Saturday, we didn't perform to our potential and we wanted to try and put that right. Full credit to the players.

Strong counter-attacking play.

We knew we had to be setup right, we knew we had to press the ball in certain areas and at certain times, and we did that tremendously well. At half-time we spoke about there not being enough care when we did break, we had three or four good opportunities. In the second-half we did loads better with it, the second goal was great with brilliant pressing in the middle of the park, Armand then slips Vass and Pottsy's done tremendously well to be in there.

Half-time substitution of Clark Robertson.

Clark just got a bang into his ribs and he just felt a little bit sick. He didn't feel he could carry on, so we took him off and changed him.

Backing this result up against Crawley on Saturday.

We've had three tough, tough games - Carlisle here, Crewe and tonight - and we now need to recover quickly to try and go back-to-back because we've not done that this season yet. That's the challenge to this group.
