Donnelly's Side Edge Rotherham Clash

The youth team secured a 1-0 win against Rotherham United in the group stage of the Youth Alliance Cup on Saturday.

Will Dunne scored the winning goal late in the second-half to give Blackpool all three points after they spurned a plethora of chances.

The Seasiders started the match on the front foot and had an early chance through Rowan Roache, who found space to shoot from the edge of the area.

A few minutes later Roache played a dangerous fizzing cross into the box that just evaded Christian N’Guessan.

Blackpool continued to pepper the Rotherham goal with shots with N’Guessan, Ben Badu and Roache all going close within a ten-minute period.

Tyler Rufus forced the keeper into a good save before Wainwright also tested him but could not find a way through.

The Seasiders were so dominant that the hosts made a tactical substitution before the half-hour mark.

The hosts had their first chance of the game in the 32nd minute after finding space in the box to shoot but were denied by Jack Sims who pulled off a great save.

Half-time: Rotherham United 0 Blackpool 0

Blackpool were inches away from taking the lead just a few minutes after the restart when Roache crossed the ball to Dunne who grazed the side-netting.

Roache was the creator again just moments later when he put a cross into the box that Rufus headed just off-target.

Blackpool were gifted a free-kick inside the Rotherham area after an error of judgement led to a back-pass.

Roache took the free-kick but could not find his way through the large wall that the hosts had set up.

For all of the chances that The Seasiders had it looked like they would have to settle for a point until Dunne broke the deadlock in the 80th minute.

The 16-year-old was on the end of Roache’s cross at the back post to score his first goal for the under-18s.

The hosts pushed for a late equaliser but the Seasiders stood firm to secure six points from their opening two group stage games of the Youth Alliance Cup.

They now face a crucial final match of the group stage against Morecambe, who are also on six points.

Full-time: Rotherham United 0 Blackpool 1
