Youthful Side Narrowly Beaten In Lancashire Senior Cup

7 September 2016

Eight Youth Team Players Start In Fleetwood Encounter

A young Blackpool side narrowly lost 1-0 to Fleetwood Town in the Lancashire Senior Cup at Poolfoot Farm.

Ciaran Donnelly’s team of Under-18s, with three recent graduates of the academy, looked to be taking the tie to penalties, but they were beaten by Nick Haughton's late goal.

Blackpool started the game well and came close to scoring after just a few minutes, when Christian N'Guessan hit the side netting with a shot just inside the area.

Ben Badu also threatened with a shot but his effort was blocked by a Fleetwood defender.

At the other end the hosts appeared to be through on goal but were denied by a last-gasp tackle by Luke Higham.

N’Guessan, who put in a great performance in midfield, came close again when he headed the ball just off-target from Jack Newton’s cross.

The Seasiders started the second-half on the front foot and had a great chance to score when Henry Cameron was on the end of a through ball but he couldn’t quite aim his shot on target.

Will Dunne then forced Alex Cairns into a good save with a low shot, before Myles Boney was called into action at the other end of the pitch.

The goal came midway through the second half when Haughton ran with the ball and scored from just outside the area.

However, there was an air of controversy around the goal with the Blackpool staff protesting that there was a push in the back on one of their players.

The goal was a cruel blow to the Blackpool team who had played well and worked hard throughout the game.

The Seasiders pressed for an equaliser but could not find a way through a resolute Fleetwood defence.
