Defender Plays Through Injury In 2-0 Victory
Ciaran Donnelly heaped praise on defender Denzel Williams after he played through injury to help the youth team to a 2-0 win against Accrington Stanley.
The centre-back was a key part of a defence that kept their 14th competitive clean sheet of the season.
Speaking post-match, here's what the academy manager had to say...
A battling performance.
Accrington were tough to break down, they were competitive, they had a lot of set-pieces and the game was quite even. We just had that little bit of extra quality, that we’ve had all season, to put our chances away when we needed to.
We were particularly pleased with Denzel Williams. He’s carrying a knock but he played with his ankle heavily strapped up to do a job for the team because he wants to help the team and he thought he could get through it and he did.
Without him, we could’ve been looking at a different scoreline because he was strong, dealt with the aerial threat that Accrington had and he was our leader at the back.
The title push.
It’s a bit of a cliché in football, but we can only take our games one at a time knowing that if we win each one, then we will win the league. We try not to focus on everybody else, if they win all their games then so be it, but we’ve got to focus on winning ours and putting performances together.
Four games away from a league and cup double.
There’s two trophies available left to us and we want to win the two of them. We’re still in with a good shout going into the last four games of the season – three in the league and one in the cup. If we win all four, then we’ll win two trophies.
We’ve had an excellent season. The lads have really enjoyed it and I’ve really enjoyed working with them and we want to finish by having something to show for it.
