After the heroics of Friday’s FA Youth Cup game, Blackpool suffered in their league game against Rochdale, falling to a 2-0 defeat.
Rochdale started as the better team and should have gone in front inside the opening two minutes. Fabio Tavares was set free, but he placed his shot wide of the far post.
This set the scene for much of the match, with a Rochdale free-kick, put into the box by Aaron Morley, needing to be saved by Craig Thordarson.
Neil Kuemo then started to come alive for The Dale, earning a corner after his ball in was blocked by Nana Adarkwa. Kuemo then got on the end of the corner, but he headed wide.
Another Kuemo run down the left set up another corner after Craig Thordarson came out to smother the ball at the winger’s feet. This time, it was Lewis Neild with the free header but, again, it went just past the post.
Kuemo continued to be a danger, forcing a smart save from Craig Thordarson later in the half, with the Blackpool ‘keeper having to tip the ball over at his near post. Then, just minutes later, Kuemo’s ball across had to be diverted away by Will Avon on his six-yard line.
The half-hour mark saw Rochdale take the lead through captain Joe Renner. A corner came in from the right, and a goalmouth scramble ensued, before Renner tapped the ball home.
The Seasiders started to come into the half late on, with Nana Adarkwa getting past the Dale left-back, who proceeded to pull him down. Rowan Roache took the free-kick but it was deflected away.
Half Time: Rochdale 1 Blackpool 0
Blackpool made a half-time change, with Brendon O’Brien coming on for the ill Alwyn Flynn. Straight away the visitors got the ball into the Rochdale box, before it was cleared away.
They then made a second change, with Sam Maddox coming on for Lewis Wainwright down the left-hand side. Owen Watkinson then brought a smart save from Bradley Wade in the Dale goal.
Blackpool had a few efforts from range, but only one troubled the Rochdale goal. Rowan Roache’s shot from 30 yards out moved in the air, and just hit Wade, with the ‘keeper not knowing much about it.
With ten minutes to go, Rochdale doubled their lead. The ball was played into the box, and Craig Thordarson saved the first effort, but it fell at the feet of Fabio Tavares who made it 2-0 to the hosts.
A disappointing result for Blackpool after the jubilation of Friday night.
