Academy Manager On Important Youth Victory
Ciaran Donnelly was delighted with his side’s 7-2 win against Lancashire rivals Accrington Stanley on Tuesday.
Rowan Roache bagged four goals with Tyler Rufus, Christian N'Guessan and Ben Jacobson getting their names on the score-sheet to complete a resounding victory.
The win takes the youth team four points clear at the top of the North West Youth Alliance table, with second-placed Walsall having played a game less.
Speaking post-match, here's what the academy manager had to say...
A great performance.
We came into the game with an emphasis on producing a real, positive performance and going back to our free-scoring ways, and we did that so I couldn’t ask for more from the lads. We played fast football with some really good link-up play.
We’ve had a lot of tough games against teams in the top six in the last few games and even though we would’ve liked a few more wins on the board, it’s great that we’ve come out of that run of fixtures unbeaten.
The title push.
Realistically it’s probably between us, Walsall and Rochdale now. We’re four points clear though Walsall have a game in hand, but if you ask any manager then they would say that they’d rather have points on the board instead of a game in hand.
The season isn’t over yet; we’ve just go to keep on doing what we’ve been doing. If we concentrate on ourselves and play our football, then the results should come. There’s nine league games left plus a cup semi-final, so there’s a lot of games still to go but we’ve got a talented group and we’re expecting them to push on.
A bright future.
We had a few of our key players missing and the first years that stepped in did really well. I think we had seven first year scholars starting the game so it was a young side for a youth team game, but we dominated from the first minute.
We’ve got a good group of first years and we’re looking forward to seeing what they can do next year when they’re second years. It’s nice to know that we’ve got strength in depth with our Under-18s squad this year so we can tinker with the team a little bit and still put in a performance like we did.
He was great because he was very dynamic, which is something we’ve been working with him on. He’s got over 20 goals for the season now so he’s having a fantastic season and we hope he can take this form into the last nine games of the season to complete what has been a fantastic effort so far.
