Report: Portsmouth 2 Blackpool 0

Blackpool suffered their first league defeat on the road since November as they went down 2-0 at Fratton Park on Tuesday night.

A goal in each half, the second coming at the death, did the damage as Pool’s unbeaten run was halted at five matches.

Gareth Evans bent home the opener and, with The Seasiders throwing everyone forward in search of an equaliser, Eoin Doyle rolled home the second on the counter attack.

The visitors improved greatly after the interval and came close though Brad Potts and Tom Aldred, but that away goal alluded Gary Bowyer’s men.

Gary Roberts really should have given his side the lead after just five minutes, but after great pace saw Doyle set him up, the veteran struck the middle of the cross bar.

As for Pool, their first opening came through Jordan Flores, but unlike on Saturday, the midfielder was denied by the goalkeeper, with David Forde equal to his effort.

Amnie Linganzi produced a similar effort for the hosts when he shot at Sam Slocombe but didn’t overly test the goalkeeper, while Kyle Vassell called Forde into action with a scuffed effort soon after.

However, with the next opening, Portsmouth took the lead, as a low cross by Enda Stevens rolled all the way through to Evans, who wrapped his foot around the ball and stuck his effort into the top corner.

The lead was deserved in truth, and it could have been more when Roberts peeled off Clark Robertson, only to guide his header narrowly past the post.

Blackpool, who changed to a 4-1-4-1 formation for the second period, improved instantly and had Potts slice an effort onto the roof of the net.

They were much improved, with Nathan Delfouneso having more joy wide left, but Doyle could have produced the sucker punch when shooting down the throat of Slocombe.

Great persistence from Flores produced their next opening, but after Vassell couldn’t connect with his cross, Potts was denied a certain goal by a brilliant piece of defending from Stevens.

With around ten minutes remaining Bowyer completely shuffled his pack, with Bright Osayi-Samuel, Sanmi Odelusi and Jamille Matt coming on for Jack Payne, Potts and Vassell.

And soon after they almost levelled, as Aldred met Flores’ corer with a firm header but it flew wide of Forde’s left-hand post.

Substitute Carl Baker wasted the chance to make it two for the hosts, before Osayi-Samuel squandered Pool’s final opening, snatching at his effort on the volley and missing the target by some distance.

And with Pool throwing everybody forward in search of an equaliser, they were picked off on the break in the last minute, as Baker squared for Doyle to simply roll into an empty net.
