Youth Team Edged Out On Penalties

6 February 2017

Cup Semi-Final Heartbreak For Donnelly's Side

The youth team were cruelly knocked out of the Youth Alliance Cup semi-finals on penalties, as Wigan Athletic edged the tie 5-4.

After going behind from a Wigan penalty in the first-half, Rowan Roache scored from the spot to level the match and take it to a shootout.

Despite the encounter being a big cup tie, both teams attacked right from the off in an end-to-end encounter.

Shortly after the half-hour mark, Wigan won a penalty for a rash challenge in the box that they scored.

Half-Time: Blackpool 0 Wigan 1

Less than 10 minutes into the second-half, Ciaran Donnelly’s side were awarded a penalty for a foul on Dylan Sumner. Roache stepped up to take it and kept his composure to level the scores.

The goal spurred the youth team on as they pressed for a winner, with Jack Newton and Dylan Sumner seeing headers saved by the goalkeeper. Roache then fired just wide of the goal.

The Republic of Ireland international had another chance to score when he twisted past a defender and curled a shot towards the corner of the goal but was denied by a superb fingertip save.

Neither side could find a late goal and the semi-final went straight to a penalty shootout that Wigan won 5-4 in.
