Youth Team Record Victory Against Tranmere

27 February 2017

Roache Scores Decisive Goal

The youth team continued their title push with a 1-0 win against Tranmere Rovers on Saturday.

With second-placed Walsall not in action, Rowan Roache’s placed shot into the bottom corner was enough for Ciaran Donnelly’s side to go seven points clear at the top of the table.

Despite winning by just one goal, Blackpool could have scored more but were denied by Tranmere goalkeeper Patrick Wharton on several occasions.

It took less than five minutes for The Seasiders to create their first opportunity when Roache switched the play to Dylan Sumner, who had a curling effort saved by Wharton.

Blackpool came close again with Finlay Sinclair-Smith having an effort palmed away and the rebound was cleared at the last minute with Rufus ready to pounce.

The deadlock was deservedly broken just before the half-hour mark, when Roache was on the end of a pass from Sumner and clinically slotted the ball into the bottom corner.

The youth team weren’t content with a one-goal lead and won successive corners but they couldn’t make the pressure pay.

Half-Time: Blackpool 1-0 Tranmere Rovers

The second-half continued in the same fashion as the first, with The Tangerines creating a plethora of chances.

Sumner was on the receiving end of a ball across the face of goal but his shot was palmed away by the goalkeeper.

Wharton kept his team in the game again with a low save to deny Sinclair-Smith, who had been bright down the left wing throughout the game.

Sumner beat the Tranmere goalkeeper but his header was ruled out for offside as Blackpool struggled to double their lead.

At the other end, the visitors created their first opportunity of the match with a long ball over the top of the defence but Jack Sims was alert to deny Udoyen Akpan.

As the referee blew the final whistle, Donnelly’s side were disappointed not to score more but were still delighted to secure an important three points.
