Newell's Goal Sees Team Edge Past Preston North End
Blackpool under-13 girls edged past local rivals Preston North End to reach the Lancashire Cup final.
Lara Newell’s second-half goal was enough to settle the eagerly anticipated tie, as she pounced at the back post to fire in.
The initial stages of the match were dominated by Preston, who were looking to maintain a three-year unbeaten record in the competition.
As the half ebbed and flowed much of the game was being battled out in the centre of midfield, with Emily Slater and Rianna Kett just about getting the better of their opposite numbers.
As the half drew to a close Preston gave one last push, however the Blackpool defence stood firm and nullified the danger.
In the second-half it was Blackpool who started brightly, though again clear chances were few and far between. Emily Slater had a long range effort well saved by the Preston keeper and Tyra Vickers hit a strike against the side netting.
It wasn’t until 15 minutes from time that Newell broke the deadlock for The Seasiders, though an excellent save from goalkeeper Pharyn Ashton was still required to secure the team’s place progress.
Blackpool now meet Wigan Athletic in the final.
