Sumner At The Double For Youth Team

19 March 2017

Donnelly's Side Beat Port Vale 2-0

The youth team got their title push back on track with a 2-0 win against Port Vale.

Dylan Sumner struck either side of half-time to give Ciaran Donnelly’s side a deserved victory in tough conditions.

The opening period of the first-half was a quiet affair, with neither side able to craft any opportunities on goal until Ben Jacobson and Ewan Bange combined with a slick one-two, leading to the former having a shot parried wide by Joe Slinn.

Blackpool continued to press and came close to testing the goalkeeper again when Sebastien Des Pres rolled a corner to Caleb Richards who had a shot saved.

The deadlock was broken just before the interval when Sumner cut inside and beat Slinn from a tight angle.

The lead was nearly doubled in quick succession when Jacobson beat his defender to get a shot away, but he was denied by a good save from the Vale goalkeeper.

About 10 minutes after the interval, The Seasiders struck the woodwork in bizarre conditions. Slinn dithered on the ball when he received a pass, which allowed Des Pres to block his eventual clearance and the deflection hit the post.

The visitors pressed hard for an equaliser, with Donnelly’s side having to defend for spells of the second-half until both teams were reduced to 10 men after a brawl broke out on the pitch.

Despite both teams being evenly punished, the dismissals seemed to work in Blackpool’s favour as they went back on the front foot.

The lead was doubled in the 75th minute when Sumner intercepted a high bouncing ball and produced a fantastic piece of skill to chip Slinn from a tight angle.

The winger’s second goal blew the wind out of the sails of the Staffordshire side as The Seasiders held on for an important win.
