Youth Team Battle Back To Earn Point

Fin Sinclair-Smith On Target In Draw At Shrewsbury

28 September 2017

Blackpool’s U18s came back form behind to grab a point away at Shrewsbury on Tuesday afternoon.

The game was a cagey affair in the opening minutes, with neither side wanting to make a mistake, and it took 12 minutes for the first shot on target.

Shrewsbury had a great chance, but Mwandwe’s shot was saved by Craig Thordarson in the Blackpool goal to keep the scores level.

Both sides then had opportunities in the next few minutes to take the lead, but the hosts fired a free-kick over the bar, before making a goal-saving tackle as The Seasiders were in on goal.

Shrewsbury then had to make an early change in goal, as substitute ‘keeper Jack Atkinson came on for the injured Cameron Gregory.

The hosts then took the lead in the 22nd minute through Lifumpa Mwandwe. His pace in behind saw him free, and he slotted past Thordarson to make it 1-0 to Shrewsbury.

Blackpool came back into the game with efforts from Fin Sinclair-Smith and Nathan Shaw both testing the goalkeeper, as the game became more open towards the end of the first half.

Sinclair-Smith had another chance late on in the half, but good defending saw the ball out for a corner, which nothing came from, the score staying 1-0 until the half time break.

Blackpool made a change at the interval, bringing on Will Avon for Alwyn Flynn, and the visitors came out firing straight away, as Rowan Roache’s early shot was saved, before Fin Sinclair-Smith fired the rebound over.

Shrewsbury then started applying the pressure as they looked for a second, but against the run of play, Finlay Sinclair-Smith got into the box and finished beautifully with his right foot, equalising for Blackpool and making the score 1-1.

Both sides had chances in the final 20 minutes, though Blackpool had to play the last five with ten men. Jack Newton was shown a straight red for a challenge on Brett Taylor.

However, The Seasiders held on to grab a well-earned point.
