Brett Ormerod has revealed how Jimmy Armfield played a key role during his recovery from a broken leg in 1999.
The striker, who had two successful stints as a player with Blackpool, says Armfield always had a knack of lifting your spirits with some great advice and tales from his career.
“Jimmy is up there with the very best, he was a Blackpool man through and through. He helped me a lot, especially when I broke my leg in the dark days of the late 90s,“ Ormerod said in tribute to the club’s record appearance holder, who passed away earlier today at the age of 82.
“I used to be on my own in the gym and he had a knack of making things never seem that bad. He’d tell me stories about his past exploits and would always put things into perspective for you. He was very good like that.”
Ormerod’s winning goal in 2010 that achieved Blackpool a return to the top-flight, for the first time since Jimmy himself was playing for the club, was also a proud moment for the great man.
“If you can see at the final whistle, he’s in the background and wiping a tear from his eye whilst everyone was celebrating. He was Blackpool through and through and football through and through. He’ll be sadly missed.”
