Jay Spearing says everybody in the Blackpool dressing room wants to improve on the club’s 12th place finish in Sky Bet League One last season.
The midfielder, who has agreed a new two-year contract at Bloomfield Road, is setting high standards ahead of the big kick-off.
“We had a fantastic year last year and we want to be better than that. We had a meeting on the first day and all decided on where we want to be and what we want to do as a team,” he said.
“Straight away we said that we want to do better than last year, we finished 12th and maybe we could have finished 10th on that last day of the season. We want to try and accomplish that and maybe go a little bit higher.”
If The Seasiders are to have another progressive season on the pitch then the experience of Spearing and fellow midfielder Jimmy Ryan will no doubt be crucial.
“I’m getting on a bit now so it’s classed as a bit of experience. If we can help the lads in any way to push them on and get the best out of them this season, then both of us will be at it,” Spearing insisted.
“There are other lads as well that are capable of doing that and even for the young lads it’s time to step up and show the league what they’re about. We’ve had a few more lads that have come from non-league sides and it’s a great opportunity for them to come and show what they’re about.”
The team’s campaign will get underway against Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday 4 August, with pre-season preparations now geared towards that match at Adams Park.
“Whatever team you are or whatever league you’re in, the boys do look at the fixture lists when they come out and you’re buzzing to see who that first game is. Everything we do now for the next four to five weeks is literally leading up to that Wycombe game. We want to go there straight away and kick off well by getting a win,” Spearing added.
