Spearing and Gnanduillet Secure Opening Day Victory

3 August 2019

Goals from Jay Spearing and Armand Gnanduillet got Simon Sadler’s reign as Blackpool owner off to the perfect start, as the Seasiders beat Bristol Rovers 2-0.

In front of 11,359 fans, the hosts opener the scoring just prior to the half-hour mark, with skipper Spearing making no mistake from the penalty spot.

With Bristol Rovers looking for a way back, Gnanduillet headed home just after the interval to give the Seasiders a two-goal cushion they would ultimately see out.

Blackpool’s first chance of the game fell to Ollie Turton inside two minutes, however he dragged his shot wide from 22-yards out.

Six minutes later, Bristol Rovers almost took the lead. Captain Ollie Clarke was played into space and watched his strike hit the outside of the post.

The Seasiders then came agonisingly close themselves, as Nathan Delfouneso’s glancing header dropped just wide.

While the action continued on the pitch, the North Stand chanted Simon Sadler’s name to great effect and even got a wave from the new owner.

In the 28th minute the crowd had even more reason to make some noise as Blackpool won a penalty. Curtis Tilt challenged for a header and was caught by the Bristol Rovers ‘keeper Anssi Jaakola. Skipper Jay Spearing stepped up from the spot and powered the Seasiders in the lead.

Ryan Edwards appealed for another spot-kick seven minutes later, only to see the referee award a foul the other way.

Liam Sercombe tried to reply for Bristol Rovers with a shot from the edge of the area, though Jak Alnwick got down well to deny him.

Then, just prior to half-time, Sullay Kaikai watched a low drive kept out by Jaakola at his near post.

Two minutes after the restart, the Seasiders made it 2-0. Armand Gnanduillet found space at the back post to head the team into a more commanding position.

In search of a way back, the visitors saw Liam Sercombe volley an effort over the Blackpool bar. Ollie Clarke then did likewise after teeing himself up.

Liam Feeney looked to pick out Gnanduillet as the striker hunted for his second and Blackpool’s third, however he looped his header over.

With 14 minutes remaining, Gnanduillet departed the scene and was replaced by new signing Joe Nuttall for his debut. Harry Pritchard soon followed in place of Nathan Delfouneso.

Chances were at a premium from there on in – bar Tyler Smith heading against the post for the opposition - as Blackpool saw the result out to kick-off the new season with all three points.
