The Big Preview: Gillingham (A)

Seasiders Go In Search of Fourth Consecutive League Win

20 August 2019

Blackpool head to Gillingham tonight aiming to match a record that was last set 73 years ago.

You have to go back to 1946 for the last time the Seasiders opened up a league campaign with four consecutive victories, which came under the management of Joe Smith.

A solitary goal on a midweek trip to Portsmouth was required to achieve the feat back then.

This time around, Blackpool make a 560-mile round trip to Kent to face a Gillingham team that went without a fixture on the weekend due to the current situation at Bury.

The Seasiders know that they must improve from Saturday's home showing against Oxford United, despite winning the game 2-1.

Team News:

Blackpool continue to monitor the fitness of Jay Spearing, Matty Virtue and Joe Nuttall, who all missed out due to injury at the weekend. Left-back James Husband definitely won't feature, as he serves the final match of his three game ban this evening.

The Gills are without defender Gabriel Zakuani and on loan Bournemouth forward Mikael Ndjoli.

Previous Meeting:

It was Gillingham who won the previous meeting between the two sides, recording a 3-0 victory at Bloomfield Road on the final day of last season. However, Blackpool's last trip to Priestfield was more rewarding from a tangerine point of view, with Nathan Delfouneso scoring the only goal of the game in November 2018.

The Manager's Thoughts:

The Referee:

Neil Hair has been confirmed to referee the match, having officiated three fixture so far this season. His last Blackpool game came away at Plymouth Argyle in September 2018.
