The Big Preview: Southend (A)

Seasiders Face The Shrimpers

9 August 2019

Blackpool's first away game of the season is a 540-mile round trip to Southend United tomorrow.

The Seasiders head to Roots Hall having got their league campaign off to the perfect start last weekend, winning 2-0 at home to Bristol Rovers. Goals from Jay Spearing and Armand Gnanduillet secured the three points in front of a crowd of 11,359 fans.

Southend, meanwhile, lost out narrowly to Coventry City. A Zain Westbrooke goal proved the difference, in a match that was played at St Andrews, home of Birmingham City.

Team News:

Only midfielder Matty Virtue (thigh) remains sidelined for Blackpool, leaving manager Simon Grayson with a strong squad to choose from. A bounce game was also arranged at Fleetwood Town in midweek for those requiring minutes.

The hosts will monitor the progress of striker Simon Cox, who made an appearance off the bench against Coventry City last weekend. The 32-year-old had previously missed a large part of pre-season due to a calf problem. Defender Rob Kiernan misses out with ligament damage.

Previous Meeting:

On a day no Blackpool fan will ever forget, it was Saturday 9 March when the two teams last met. A bumper crowd packed in to Bloomfield Road for the club's 'Homecoming' fixture, as the sides played out a 2-2 draw. An own goal from Taylor Moore, in the 96th minute, salvaged a point for the Seasiders.

Pool's last visit to Southend came in November 2018, when Ollie Turton and Armand Gnanduillet netted in a 2-1 victory.

The Manager's Thoughts:

The Referee:

Kevin Johnson will oversee proceedings at Roots Hall. He refereed two Blackpool fixtures last season - a 1-0 victory at Portsmouth and a goal-less draw at Charlton.

Payments on the day are cash only from the away sales ticket office in the North West corner of the stadium.
