Matty Virtue was pleased to get on the scoresheet again, but was disappointed to come away from the Stadium of Light with a point.
Virtue gave the Seasiders an early lead, but the Black Cats pegged them back to eventually share the spoils in a 1-1 draw.
“It was pleasing to get the goal, but I feel we could have won the game in the end,” Virtue admitted.
“It was probably one of those game where we’ve probably scored a little too early and then the game slips away from us a little bit.
“Having said that, I think it say’s a lot about this team that we’ve come away from a place like Sunderland disappointed with a point.”
Virtue now has three goals to his name in all competitions this season and is happy with the amount of game time he’s been getting over the past few weeks.
“It’s felt good and I think I’ve done quite well,” he said.
“I had a bit of setback in pre-season and then when I came back the lads were doing well, so it was hard to get into the team when the boys were in good form. But I managed to fight my way into the side recently, and I feel I’m stronger and fitter than before and I’m happy with the majority of my individual performances.
“We’ve all got to focus and dig deep now, especially over the busy Christmas period, and we’ll aim to continue to build on what’s been a good spell of form lately.”
