McPhillips: Exciting Signings

Manager Pleased With January Business

1 February 2019

Terry McPhillips says he’s excited about the potential his deadline day additions could add to the Blackpool squad between now and the end of the season.

Matty Virtue and Antony Evans yesterday arrived from Liverpool and Everton respectively, having been monitored for some time.

The pair became the fourth and fifth new faces signed in the transfer window, while Callum Guy had previously made his loan move permanent.

Here’s what the manager had to say…

Promising deadline day signings of Matty Virtue and Antony Evans…

Under-23 football is different to league football – it’s a bit tippy, tappy and all that – but I really do believe that these lads are the right types that are going to make an impact. It’s exciting.

Time will tell, but I think we’ve made two great additions there to the squad.

Youthful additions in January…

We’ve got younger, but I think that youth brings enthusiasm. Elias and Nya showed their enthusiasm the other night and these two young lads are desperate to play league football, hence why they’ve come.

Departures of Joe Bunney and John O’Sullivan…

They are both great lads. For Joe Bunney, it just hasn’t worked out for him here. You’d have to say that the form of Marc Bola has limited his opportunities. He’s been a really good professional and trained well. We wish him all the best because he just wants to play. Hopefully he can play more games now at Rochdale.

John O, I love him to bits. His enthusiasm is outstanding, he’s a great kid and everyone likes him. What he needs to do now is just go and play games. He was injured last year for quite a lot of it and he hasn’t had a run of games with us because of the way it is.

We wish both of them the best of luck and will be watching to see how they progress.

Injury blow for Jay Spearing…

You have to let it settle down at times, and we’ll do that. It doesn’t look good for him so he won’t be playing Saturday. It’s disappointing to lose one of your key members, but that’s what we’ve got and we’ll have to deal with that. Obviously Matty coming in and playing that position helps us.

A welcome return to training for Jimmy Ryan…

Jimmy trained yesterday really well and it was good to see him because he’s pleasant on the eye with his skills and trying the unusual pass. He didn’t disappoint us yesterday with that. The lads appreciated having him back. Fingers crossed that he keeps progressing. Hopefully he can get back and play some football for us.

Howard and Dodoo back…

Mark is in full training and Joe Dodoo has trained as well. That’s brilliant to have those two players back as well.
