Report: Carlisle United 2 Blackpool 1

Hosts Win Leasing.com Trophy Fixture

15 October 2019

Carlisle United came from behind to record a 2-1 victory against Blackpool in the Leasing.com Trophy.

Goals from Ryan Loft and Canice Carroll secured the three points for the hosts, who had earlier seen Calum Macdonald score his first for the Seasiders.

Blackpool made eight changes from Saturday’s home defeat to Rotherham United, with Nathan Delfouneso starting for the first time since mid-August following his recent recovery from injury.

Inside six minutes, it was Delfouneso who registered the first effort on target, driving the ball straight at Carlisle ’keeper Louis Gray.

However, chances were proving at a premium in the opening period of the game. Blackpool’s opener proved to be a gift in the 25th minute, with a tame strike from Calum Macdonald finding its way past Gray.

Ryan Loft had a great chance to level matters after riding a challenge from Ryan Edwards to race clear on goal, yet he was unable to test Chris Mafoumbi.

Despite that, Loft quickly made amends on the stroke of half-time, seeing a strike deflect up and over Mafoumbi to equalise.

Soon after the interval, Blackpool were forced into a change. Ryan Hardie came off worse from a challenge with a defender and was replaced by Armand Gnanduillet.

The game was fast fizzling out though with very little action occurring in either box. In an attempt to change that, Blackpool reverted to two up front and introduced youth team striker Ewan Bange for his first senior appearance.

It was a substitute for Carlisle who managed to muster an effort on goal though, with Nathan Thomas forcing Mafoumbi to parry his free-kick over the bar.

Then came a moment for 17-year-old Bange to mark his debut after being slipped in by Scannell, however he was denied by the Carlisle ‘keeper.

At the other end, Thomas cut in from the right and struck the far post with a curling effort.

It proved to be a warning sign for Blackpool, who lost the game late on to a 30-yard strike from Canice Carroll.
