Virtue: Good Game For Me

Midfielder Looks To Step Up Injury Return Against Morecambe

3 September 2019

Matty Virtue hopes to get his own season firmly up and running by featuring in Blackpool’s Leasing.com Trophy fixture against Morecambe tonight.

The midfielder made a brief, cameo appearance at home to Portsmouth on Saturday, having put his pre-season injury troubles to one side.

Now the 22-year-old is determined to make his first start of the season and shake off the frustration of missing the campaign’s big kick-off.

“It was a frustrating time to get injured, to be honest, in pre-season. You sort of want to build your foundations for the season, but obviously I couldn’t do that,” Virtue admitted.

“I was scheduled to play in this game, but I came back a little bit earlier, which is always a bonus. The manager threw me on for the last five or so minutes on Saturday, so I was very pleased.

“This game has now come at a good time. Hopefully I can get some minutes in it and catch up on that fitness.”

Virtue scored three goals in 13 appearances following a January switch from Liverpool last season and knows that he faces a fight on his hands to win back a regular place in the side.

“If you look around the squad, it’s a very strong squad. I think there’s numerous players for each place. The standard of training is good and it’s going to be intense and like that for the rest of the season. Everybody wants to play,” he said.

As for tonight’s game, the mentality will be no different to that shown in the league, where Blackpool have gone six matches unbeaten.

“We want to build a winning mentality about this place. Every game we want to win and that’ll be the case for this game,” he added.
