Report: Blackpool 1 Blackburn Rovers 3

25 August 2020

The Seasiders fell to a 3-1 defeat against Blackburn Rovers in their fifth pre-season match of 20/21.

Two Ben Brereton goals put Blackpool behind early on before Matty Virtue pulled one back for the hosts five minutes before the break. Tyrese Dolan rounded off the scoring with a tap in for Blackburn’s third.

Neil Critchley's side came out looking to get the ball down and play, but it was Blackburn who started the brighter of the two.

Darragh Lenihan found himself free down the right to cross towards Ben Brereton in the middle, he glanced his header past Jack Sims and into the far corner to give the visitors the lead.

Moments later, Rovers were nearly gifted a second. Jamie Devitt’s loose pass was picked up by Adam Armstrong, he drove towards goal only to be met by the onrushing Sims who denied him superbly.

The visitors were having most of the possession, and that proved costly for the Seasiders.

Brereton timed his run superbly to beat the offside trap and latch on to a defence splitting pass. With just Sims to beat, he chipped the ball over his left arm and into the back of the net.

With five minutes to go, Matty Virtue halved the deficit. A terrific through ball from Michael Nottingham found Virtue, who found himself free in the area and smashed the ball past Fisher at his near post.

Half-Time: Blackpool 1-2 Blackburn Rovers

After a quiet first 20 minutes, the first chance of the half came for the Seasiders. Oliver Sarkic found himself all alone in the final third, cut inside and unleashed an effort on goal, but substitute goalkeeper, Jordan Eastham stood firm to keep him out.

Blackpool were searching for an equaliser. Nathan Shaw wriggled his way out of a tight space in the 18-yard-box to cut back onto his left foot and shoot, but his effort ended up well over the bar.

As the match entered the final five minutes, Joe Rothwell was brought down on the edge of the area. Jacob Davenport stepped up and hit the free kick straight down the middle of the goal and into Alex Fojticek’s arms.

However, the game was not done there. Fojticek was caught in possession by Tyrese Dolan who poked the ball into an empty net late on to secure the victory for Blackburn.
