Preview: Accrington Stanley (A)

18 December 2020

Blackpool travel to the Wham Stadium on Saturday to take on high-flying Accrington Stanley in Sky Bet League One.

Both sides come into Saturday’s game in good form. Blackpool have won three of the last five matches, including a dramatic late victory over league leaders Hull City on Tuesday evening, and sit in 12th place coming into Saturday’s match.

Accrington, meanwhile, secured an eye-catching three points away at Gillingham in mid-week, which saw John Coleman’s side rise to eighth in the league table – just one point outside of the play-off places.

Stanley have proved a difficult side to break down this season, particularly over recent weeks, having lost just one league game since mid-October.

The Key Man

Top scorer Dion Charles has scored six goals and made two assists so far this season, proving a real threat for Accy.

The 25-year-old is a product of Blackpool’s Academy, coming through the ranks to go on and represent the likes of AFC Fylde, Fleetwood Town and Southport, before securing a permanent move to the Football League in 2019, joining Accrington for an undisclosed fee.

Last Time We Met

This will be the second meeting between the two sides already this season, with Accrington securing a Papa John’s Trophy bonus point thanks to a penalty shootout victory in the 1-1 draw at the Wham Stadium back in October. Keshi Anderson gave the Seasiders the lead before Colby Bishop equalised for the hosts.

Neil Critchley

“Both sides are in good form, so it should make for an entertaining game. John Coleman has done a wonderful job at Accrington over recent years, and they will be using his knowledge and wisdom to help continue to guide them up the table. It will be a tough match, but it’s one we are looking forward to.”

John Coleman

“I’ve watched Blackpool a lot and they’ve got good players, a good Head Coach and good staff. They had a difficult start, but they’ve managed to turn it around which I had no doubt they would. They will be up there this season.”
