Preview: Fleetwood Town (A)

8 December 2020

Blackpool make the trip to Highbury on Tuesday evening to take on Fleetwood Town for the second time in just four days.

The Seasiders ran out 1-0 victors in the league match on Saturday, thanks to Gary Madine’s first-half header, to take them within five points of the play-off spots. All eyes tonight, however, will be on the Papa John’s Trophy, with a place in the last 16 of the competition up for grabs at Highbury.

Blackpool finished second in the group stages of this season’s competition, behind Accrington Stanley, whilst Fleetwood finished top of Group A with three victories from three, defeating Carlisle United, Sunderland and Aston Villa U21’s.

Neil Critchley has confirmed he intends to make several changes in personnel for the game, giving crucial game time to players who haven’t featured much so far this season. Matty Virtue could make a long-awaited return from injury for the game.

Neil Critchley:

“This is a competition we want to do well in. We worked hard to qualify out of the group, and we have ambitions of going further in the competition.

“We won at Fleetwood in the league on Saturday, which was really impressive, but this is a different game and a different competition. We’re expecting a tough match, but are looking forward to the challenge ahead.”

Joey Barton:

“There’s no point dwelling on Saturday’s result. We’ve got to put it right on Tuesday night. We’ve got to be bang at it from the get-go and I think the challenge now is over to the players.”
