Preview: Rochdale AFC (H)

24 December 2020

Blackpool welcome Rochdale to Bloomfield Road on Boxing Day, in what is the final home match of 2020.

Blackpool come into the fixture on the back of a fourth clean sheet in five matches, thanks to the 0-0 draw at Accrington Stanley last weekend. Neil Critchley’s side currently hold impressive form, having lost just once in nine league matches, and sit in 12th place coming into the fixture – five points off of the play-off places.

The Seasiders will be without Club captain Chris Maxwell and Matty Virtue, with the pair ruled out for the next couple of weeks due to returning positive tests for Coronavirus.

Rochdale currently sit in 19th place coming into the game, winning five of their opening 19 league games. Four of those victories have come on the road, with impressive victories at Burton, Shrewsbury, Plymouth and Wigan.

Their only home victory so far this season came against Fleetwood Town in October.

Last Time We Met:

The last meeting between both sides took place in August 2019, with the Seasiders securing a point on their travels in a 0-0 draw.

Blackpool last welcomed Rochdale to Bloomfield Road in October 2018 in a 2-2 draw.

The Key Player: Matty Lund

Matty Lund is enjoying a successful start to his return at Rochdale since re-joining the Club from Scunthorpe United in January 2020.

The 30-year-old midfielder has made close to 250 appearances in the EFL, representing the likes of Bradford, Bristol Rovers and Southend United. A four year association with Rochdale ended in 2017, before a move back to Spotland earlier this year.

Lund has scored an impressive seven goals from midfield so far this season, making him the Club’s top goal scorer.

Neil Critchley:

“They’ve had some good results lately, particularly away from home. They’re searching for a level of consistency, but when they put it together, they will be really difficult to play against. They’re well coached and have a good side, so we have to be ready for the threats they pose and cause them problems too.”

Brian Barry-Murphy:

“There’s a lot of big teams in this division, and Blackpool are one of those. The calibre of players they’ve brought into the Club in the summer were exceptional. We'll work hard and make sure Blackpool know they’re in a game.”
