Blackpool secured their first victory of 2020 in a 2-1 win over Southend United.
The Seasiders, who hadn't tasted a victory in ten matches before the game, knew the pressure was on but a brace from Armand Gnanduillet secured a vital three points for Simon Grayson's men.
Both sides started brightly and the visitors had a good opportunity on ten minutes. Sam Barratt tried his luck from distance with a curling effort, but his shot was well held by Chris Maxwell.
Almost 20 minutes had passed when Blackpool could have taken the lead thanks to Southend's Mark Milligan. A cross on the left from Marc Bola was met by Milligan in the six yard box, with the Southend defender almost knocking it into is own net, but for the ball to go just wide of the far post.
Just moments later, Milligan had a great first time effort from outside the area go just over the bar.
With ten minutes of the first half remaining, Ollie Turton had his heart in his mouth as the ball went under his feet when attempting an interception. Thankfully, Stephen McLaughlin who was clean through on goal, chipped the ball high and wide of the goal.
Two minutes later, and Blackpool took the lead through Armand Gnanduillet. Liam Feeney’s fantastic cross on the right hand side was headed home from Gnanduillet from just two yards out to give the Seasiders a half-time lead.
Half Time: Blackpool 1 Southend United 0
Blackpool almost doubled their lead minutes after the restart with Gnanduillet doing well to cut inside his man and work the space for the shot, but his curling effort went just over the goal.
Then at the other end, Sam Mantom had a powerful effort palmed away brilliantly by Chris Maxwell again.
With an hour on the clock, the Seasiders were awarded a penalty. Nathan Delfouneso, who was brought on moments earlier for Gary Madine, worked his magic before cutting inside ready to shoot. Mark Oxley in the Southend rushed out, however, and brough Delfouneso down with the referee awarding a penalty. Up stepped Armand Gnanduillet, who sent the goalkeeper the wrong way, and slotted home the penalty.
Blackpool were pressing for a third to finish the game off, but were cut cold with a wonder goal from Stephen McLaughlin. The Irishman found space outside the area, before smashing a ruthless shot past Chris Maxwell into the top corner to make the score 2-1.
Blackpool were able to hang on towards the end to secure a huge three points in the "Seaside Derby."
