Opposition Report: Sunderland

A Brief Look At The Black Cats

12 March 2020

Sunderland make the trip to Bloomfield Road on Saturday afternoon, with both sides looking to return to winning ways.

The Black Cats, who sit outside the play off places on goal difference heading into Saturday's match, have failed to register a win in their last four matches securing just two points from a possible 12.

Before their difficult run, Sunderland shot up the table thanks to a run of nine victories from 12 matches which included impressive wins over Wycombe, Lincoln and Oxford.

Chris Maguire and Lynden Gooch are the Club's top scorers so far this season, with ten goals each. Gooch - a product of Sunderland's Academy - has also registered nine assists to his name so far this season.

A 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture back in December saw Blackpool pick up a valuable point on the road. Matty Virtue gave the Seasiders an early lead with a strike from distance, before Charlie Wyke equalised for the hosts.

Last Three Results:

7/3/20 - Sunderland 2-2 Gillingham

The Manager: Phil Parkinson

Parkinson joined the Black Cats in October 2019 following the departure of Jack Ross. Despite a rocky start to life in the North East, winning just two of his first 14 matches, Parkinson has now galvanized Sunderland to become a major promotion candidate yet again this season.

As well as managing Sunderland, Parkinson has gained a vast amount of experience of Football League management. He has also been in charge of Colchester United, Hull City, Charlton Athletic, Bradford City and Bolton Wanderers.

The Key Man: Luke O'Nien

O’Nien has gone on to become a consistent performer in the Sunderland side since his move from Wycombe Wanderers in 2018. The midfielder, who can also play at right back, has made over 70 appearances for the Black Cats to date and won the Young Player of the Year Award after his first season at the Stadium of Light.
