Opposition Report: Tranmere Rovers

A Look At Tuesday Nights Visitors

9 March 2020

Tranmere Rovers visit Bloomfield Road on Tuesday evening, with both sides in relatively impressive form heading into the fixture.

The Club is spending it's first season back in the third tier of English football, after a dramatic extra time victory over Newport County in the League Two Play-Off Final at Wembley Stadium back in May last year.

Since their promotion, Rovers have been finding it difficult to adjust to life in League One and come into today’s match languishing in the relegation zone in 21st place.

Having said that, the Club have picked up notable results recently, winning their last two matches before tonight’s game with victories over Shrewsbury Town and Accrington Stanley away from home.

Manager Micky Mellon has been in charge at Prenton Park since 2016 and has guided Tranmere out of the National League to their current position, having also won the National League Play-Off Final back in May 2018.

The club’s top scorer is summer signing Morgan Ferrier, who has eight goals to his name in all competitions, despite missing three months through injury earlier on in the season.

Blackpool met Tranmere over Christmas, with Morgan Ferrier cancelling out Matty Virtue’s goal at Prenton Park back in December in a 1-1 draw.

Last Three Results:

7/3/20 – Accrington Stanley 1-2 Tranmere Rovers

25/2/20 – Shrewsbury Town 2-3 Tranmere Rovers

22/2/20 – Wycombe Wanderers 3-1 Tranmere Rovers

The Manager: Micky Mellon

Micky Mellon has an incredible five promotions to his name in his 12 years as a manager. He gained two promotions at Fleetwood Town, guiding them from the sixth tier of English football to the Football League for the very time in the club’s history. Following a four year spell at the Cod Army, Mellon then took charge at Shrewsbury Town in 2014, taking them back into League One after their relegation the season before.

He was appointed manager of Tranmere Rovers in October 2016, departing Shrewsbury Town to take over at Rovers who were two divisions below in the National League. Now in his fourth season at Prenton Park, Mellon has guided Tranmere from non-league football to the third tier with two successive promotions, both at Wembley Stadium. The first was back in 2018, thanks to a 2-1 victory over Boreham Wood in the National League Play-Off Final. The club finished sixth in their first season back in the Football League, and gained another promotion at Wembley, beating Newport County in the League Two Play-Off Final. Tranmere have had a difficult return to life back in League One, and currently lie in 21st place in the table.

Star Man: Kieron Morris

25-year-old Kieron Morris has been a consistent regular for Tranmere Rovers since his move from Walsall in June 2019. The winger has five goals and six assists to his name from his wide position this season including a brace in Tranmere’s 2-2 draw with Wycombe Wanderers in the Emirates FA Cup earlier this season.

Morris started his career out at Walsall, making over 150 appearances for the Club before joining Tranmere last year.
