Opposition Report: MK Dons

A Look At Saturday's Visitors To Bloomfield Road

22 October 2020

Blackpool will be hoping to put their recent form behind them, as they welcome MK Dons to Bloomfield Road on Saturday.

MK Dons will also be looking to build some momentum in League One themselves, after falling to a 3-2 defeat against Oxford United in a five-goal thriller on Tuesday evening.

Despite holding out until late, Chuks Aneke condemned the Seasiders to their fifth defeat of the season after scoring a late winner at Bloomfield Road.

The Visitors

Despite an unexpected end to the 19/20 season, Russell Martin steered the Dons away from relegation after picking up some impressive victories at Stadium MK against Bristol Rovers, Portsmouth and Wycombe Wanderers.

A busy summer has seen the visitors make 10 new additions to the squad, in the hope of building on their foundations from last campaign. Experienced forward Cameron Jerome and Norwich loanee Carlton Morris have bolstered options in attack. Midfielder Scott Fraser and defender Richard Keogh also joined the club to add some experience and quality to the ranks.

The Dons have had a tough start to their 20/21 campaign, winning only one out of their first seven league matches. Though, a 2-0 victory against Gillingham most recently will give Martin’s side some confidence ahead of their trip to Bloomfield Road.

The Manager

A former MK Dons player before starting his managerial career, Russell Martin was appointed as Dons manager in November 2019, replacing Paul Tisdale.

Prior to his arrival, MK Dons struggled for form under Tisdale after only picking up 13 points from their first 16 games, seeing them slip to 21st in League One. Martin, a former Scotland international, managed to steer his side away from relegation after finishing five points above the drop zone. Tranmere Rovers, Southend United and Bolton Wanderers all suffered relegation to League Two.

The 34-year-old made over 200 appearances for Norwich City in a eight year spell with the Canaries, helping the club to promotion to the Premier League. Martin, who is experiencing his first managerial spell, will be hoping to turn results in his side's favour ahead of a vital clash at Bloomfield Road on Saturday.
