Report: Liverpool 7 Blackpool 2

5 September 2020

Blackpool suffered defeat to a strong Liverpool side in the final pre-season outing of 20/21.

Despite the final scoreline, the Seasiders led 2-0 at Anfield at one stage, with CJ Hamilton and Jerry Yates putting Blackpool ahead at the home of the Premier League champions.

However, goals from Joel Matip, Sadio Mane, Mo Salah, Harvey Elliot, Takumi Minamino, Divock Origi and Sepp Van Den Berg completed a turn around with Liverpool securing the victory.

Neil Critchley’s men started brightly, with CJ Hamilton causing James Milner real issues on the right hand side. It was Hamilton who gave Blackpool the lead on 15 minutes, beating his man and sprinting at goal before curling a shot past Allison in front of the Kop.

Jerry Yates then gave Blackpool a 2-0 lead just after half an hour, thanks to a penalty. CJ Hamilton was brought down from Allison, with Yates stepping up and smashing the penalty past the Brazillian goalkeeper.

The hosts halved the deficit just before the half-time whistle, with Joel Matip rising highest from a corner and heading home.

Half-time: Liverpool 1 Blackpool 2

Liverpool looked a stronger side for the second 45 minutes, and found themselves in front after just ten minutes. Sadio Mane scored a lucky goal, with a shot bouncing off the crossbar and falling to him for a simple tap in to level the scores, before Mo Salah found the back of the net after Blackpool failed to clear their lines.

Blackpool struggled to gain any momentum in the second half, with Harvey Elliot getting on the scoresheet to make it 4-2 to Liverpool just after the hour mark.

Minamino made it five minutes later, before Divock Origi and Sepp Van Den Berg completing the tie in the final minutes of the game.
