Preview: Charlton Athletic (A)

26 February 2021

The Seasiders travel to Charlton Athletic on Saturday looking to make it back-to-back away league victories and three wins on the bounce.

Neil Critchley’s side secured a hard-fought 1-0 win at Portsmouth last weekend, and will be looking for a similar performance against a strong Charlton Athletic side on Saturday.

Charlton, who started the season off in electric form, have fallen off the pace in recent weeks, having won just one of their last five league matches. The side have also failed to win a match on home turf since mid-December, having not won in their last six matches at the Valley.

Blackpool come into Saturday’s match in 14th place; nine points off of the play-offs, though they have played fewer matches than any side in the division, with 20 games still to play. Charlton are in ninth, three points more than Blackpool, but have played four more matches than the Seasiders.

Team News:

The Seasiders are without long-term absentees Daniel Gretarsson, Marvin Ekpiteta and Keshi Anderson.

Last Time We Met:

Charlton secured a narrow 1-0 win at Bloomfield Road back in October thanks to a late strike from Chuks Aneke. Both sides played much of the game with ten men, after James Husband was sent off for Blackpool, while Ben Purrington was dismissed late in the first half.

The Key Player: Chuks Aneke

Graduating from the Arsenal Academy, Chuks Aneke has enjoyed a successful career, particularly since joining Charlton on a permanent move in 2019.

The 27-year-old has been a stand-out performer for the Addicks this season, scoring 12 goals in all comeptitions.

Neil Critchley:

“Things seemed to be going against us in the period we played Charlton here earlier in the season, particularly as we played the majority of the match with ten men. It was a real sickener to concede so late on after holding them at bay for a long period, but I think the players took a lot from that game.

“Charlton have quality, but we have good form at the moment. We’re going to have to play at a similar level to that which we played at Portsmouth last weekend to get anything from the game.”
