Rochdale visit Bloomfield Road on Tuesday evening in the first piece of action for the Seasiders in ten days.
Blackpool’s last two matches have been postponed due to a frozen pitch at Bloomfield Road, meaning Tuesday will be their first match since the defeat at Ipswich at the start of February. The Seasiders have so far played 24 matches in League One – less than any other side in the division – and will be looking to play catch-up on recent postponements, with the side facing eight matches in the next four weeks.
Neil Critchley’s men sit in 16th place coming into the match; ten points off of sixth placed Sunderland, but have three matches in hand.
As for Rochdale, Brian Barry Murphy’s side sit in 18th place in the league table, having played 27 matches. The side are two points clear of the relegation zone, having won just once in their past ten matches.
Matty Virtue and Ethan Robson could feature on Tuesday evening, having both recently returned to training. Gary Madine, CJ Hamilton, Dan Gretarsson and Keshi Anderson remain sidelined.
Last Time We Met:
A 0-0 draw at Rochdale in August 2019 was the last time both sides met. Rochdale secured a point in their last visit to Bloomfield Road in October 2018 in a 2-2 draw, courtesy of a late Calvin Andrew equaliser.
The Key Player: Alex Newby
25-year-old Alex Newby has risen through non-league to go on and become a key player for Rochdale this season.
The attacking-midfielder joined the Dale from National League North side Chorley during the summer, where he won promotion to the National League in 2019.
Before his move to Victory Park, Newby played for the likes of Clitheroe, Kendal Town and Barrow AFC. Since moving to Spotland, Newby has scored seven goals in all competitions, including a brace in the 2-1 win at Bristol Rovers in January.
“Rochdale have been involved in quite a number of high-scoring games so far this season, which tells you how they want to play. They’ve got a lot of intelligent, technical players in their team who can cause you real problems. We know we’re going to have to nullify their threats and imprint our identity onto them and how we want to play.”
