Blackpool secured all three points in a hard fought 2-0 victory over Northampton Town at Bloomfield Road on Tuesday evening.
Marvin Ekpiteta's first half strike give the Seasiders an early lead, but the visitors made Blackpool work hard for the victory, with Jerry Yates scoring a wonderful solo goal in the 90th minutes to claim the three points.
Ten minutes into the match, Ellis Simms had a good opportunity at goal. A wonderful pass from Virtue fed Simms through, who had an effort on goal from a tight angle, but the effort was well saved by Mitchell in the Northampton goal.
It didn’t take long for Blackpool to take the lead through Marvin Ekpiteta’s second goal in as many matches. Sullay Kaikai did well to not give up on a ball that was looking likely to go out for a goal kick by keeping it in on the far side. Kaikai’s cross caused plenty of trouble in the box, with the goalkeeper flapping at the ball, only to fall kindly to the Blackpool defender at the back post, who simply headed it in from close range with no Northampton player in sight.
Northampton rarely threatened in the opening half an hour, though Sam Hoskins did have a good opportunity for the visitors from distance, with his curling effort blocked well to go just wide of the goal.
Ryan Watson then did well for the visitors to weave his way past three Blackpool players on the left and line up the shot, but his effort was saved from Maxwell, which was the last meaningful action of the first half.
Half time: Blackpool 1 Northampton Town 0
Blackpool had the best of the opening opportunities in the second half, with Sullay Kaikai’s free kick from 20 yards out well saved by Mitchell in the Northampton goal.
Kenny Dougall then had an effort from the outside of the area go just wide after a lovely counter-attack from the Seasiders cut Northampton open.
Blackpool had a golden opportunity to double the lead on the hour mark through Kevin Stewart. Northampton threw all their players forward for a free kick in an effort to find the equaliser, but the ball was cleared away to Kaikai on the break, who was clean through on goal from the half way line. Kaikai ran at goal, with both Matty Virtue and Kevin Stewart in support, with Kaikai opting to pass to his right leaving Stewart a golden opportunity to score on his home debut, but the effort smacked against the post and bounced clear.
Northampton were defending well and were doing everything to find an unlikely equaliser, but Blackpool ensured all three points were there in the 90th minute. A wonderful throw from Chris Maxwell released Jerry Yates, who weaved his way into the box, rounded two defenders and creeped the ball under Mitchell to make it 2-0 at the death and secure another win for Blackpool at Bloomfield Road.
