Blackpool secured a league double over Portsmouth for the first time since 1970 in a late 1-0 victory at Fratton Park.
Jerry Yates' late winner in the final ten minutes saw the Seasiders secure all three points in a highly contested, tight affair.
Blackpool started brightly and almost bundled the ball home in the opening three minutes. Ellis Simms had an effort from inside the area from a tight angle saved by the Portsmouth goalkeeper, before Jerry Yates slid in for the rebound only for Charlie Daniels to block the effort from going over the line.
Luke Garbutt then stung the palms of MacGillivray in the Portsmouth goal with a free-kick, which he whipped around the wall well. The Portsmouth goalkeeper was there though to tip it behind.
Ellis Simms saw a header at goal go over on 25 minutes, with Grant Ward’s cross from the right-hand-side causing all sorts of problems.
With half an hour gone, Portsmouth thought they’d taken the lead. A corner kick on the left-hand-side evaded everyone but Ryan Williams at the back post, who’s effort was well blocked. The rebound fell to a Portsmouth player in the melee, who’s shot at goal from six yards out was incredibly blocked on the line from James Husband and eventually cleared away.
Despite chances for both sides in the opening 45 minutes, the first half ended goalless.
Half-time: Portsmouth 0 Blackpool 0
Blackpool were forced into a half-time change, with Demetri Mitchell replacing Ellis Simms who had been given a yellow card in the first half.
Neither side were able to capitalize on what was a tight second half in the early stages. Jerry Yates turned and had a half chance on the hour mark which went wide of the goal.
Luke Garbutt saw an effort tipped behind from the Portsmouth goalkeeper on 70 minutes after a wonderful first touch teed the shot up, only for his effort from the corner of the penalty area to be well saved.
Jerry Yates, who was single-handedly leading the line in the second half did superbly well in the final ten minutes of the game, to score a brilliant solo goal. The striker picked the ball up on the half way line and ran at goal, despite being clipped by a Portsmouth man. With a defender between him and a clean shot at goal, Yates took the ball onto his right foot and shot at goa, squeezing the ba past the goalkeeper and into far corner to spark jubilant scenes on the away side bench and secure a big three points for the Seasiders.
