Neil Critchley admitted his players couldn't have given anything more after exiting the Emirates FA Cup to Premier League Brighton & Hove Albion.
The Seasiders headed to the Amex without several first-team players due to injury and coronavirus, yet remained in a contest that they eventually lost 2-1.
"The players couldn't have given anything more, physically. They ran themselves into the ground, and we were always in the game," Critchley said.
"We were playing against a really good team, away from home, and they made it really difficult for us."
The absence of numerous individuals led to a change of system, with Pool planning differently for the opposition from Friday morning onwards.
"We had to think quickly and on our feet to come up with a plan, and we felt that this was the plan that would work against them," he revealed.
"We changed our shape a little bit, and when we changed our shape again near the end of the game, it opened it up and they had some chances but, until that, they've scored with a 30-yard screamer and a deflected shot.
"We needed a bit of luck and we didn't get it."
