Preview: AFC Wimbledon (H)

5 March 2021

AFC Wimbledon visit Bloomfield Road this weekend, in the first Saturday league fixture the Seasiders have hosted since mid-December.

Blackpool would make it five games unbeaten by avoiding defeat in the match and would make it six victories from eight league matches with a win.

A close encounter with Crewe on Tuesday evening ended in a 1-1 draw, with the Seasiders conceding a rare late goal to end their three match winning run.

AFC Wimbledon come into Saturday’s game on the back of a hard-fought point on their travels at Shrewsbury Town in mid-week – their first draw under new manager Mark Robinson.

The Dons occupy the last relegation spot heading into the match, in 20th place – just one point from safety. The Seasiders lie in 13th place on 44 points having played 28 matches. Neil Critchley’s men could climb up to eighth in the league table with a victory on Saturday.

Team News:

CJ Hamilton made a long-awaited return to action in the draw with Crewe in mid-week, and could feature again this weekend. James Husband could make a return having missed the past couple of matches, whilst Daniel Gretarsson and Gary Madine continue their recovery.

Last Time We Met:

AFC Wimbledon took all three points in the reverse fixture back in October, with Blackpool finishing the game with nine men in the 1-0 defeat.

Blackpool secured a 2-0 win over AFC Wimbledon in their last visit to Bloomfield Road in November 2019, thanks to an Armand Gnanduillet brace.

The Key Player: Joe Pigott

27-year-old Joe Pigott is the lynchpin of Wimbledon’s side, having scored 14 league goals so far this season – almost triple more than any other Dons player. Pigott signed for AFC Wimbledon in 2018, having played for the likes of Maidstone United, Luton Town and Cambridge United before that.

Neil Critchley:

“The new manager has come in and tried to implement a different style of game, which can take time. We know from early on in the season, that they have some good players. If we’re not prepared, then teams can beat you in this league. Wimbledon will be looking to back their good point up from mid-week with another good result, so we need be professional and get things right on Saturday.”
