Report: Blackpool 3 Peterborough United 1

23 March 2021

Blackpool made it ten games unbeaten in a thrilling 3-1 win over Peterborough United on Tuesday evening.

A Jerry Yates brace and a Luke Garbutt strike were enough to snatch another win for Blackpool and move the side up to sixth in the League Oen table.

Blackpool started the game like a steam train and took the lead in the opening 60 seconds. The Seasiders pressed Peterborough incredibly high and won possession back in the attacking-third. Kaikai passed to Jerry Yates, who ran at goal and smashed a wonderful effort past Christy Pym into the bottom corner.

The Seasiders were relentless, and were causing the visitors all sorts of problems. There were calls for the Peterborough goalkeeper, Christy Pym, to be sent off for an apparent deliberate handball when chasing down a loose ball forward, with the shot-stopper handling the ball outside of his area. The referee though, gave a free-kick with no further action taken.

Elliot Embleton had a good effort from distance later in the first half, after no Peterborough player in sight closed him down. The effort was well held by Pym, though.

Peterborough struggled to muster any meaningful opportunity on goal until the dying moments of added time. A cross from the left-hand-side from Sammie Szmodics was met with the left foot of Joe Ward on the volley to smack off the far post and into the goal to level the score at half-time.

Blackpool showed no lack of energy or desire when they came out for the second half, with Jerry Yates firing a shot at goal in the opening five minutes, with the effort blocked by Nathan Thompson out for a corner.

It was from that corner that Blackpool were awarded a penalty after Frankie Kent was adjudged to have handle the ball in the penalty area. Jerry Yates stepped up and tucked the ball away, sending the goalkeeper the other way to give Blackpool the lead again.

It wasn’t long before the Seasiders extended their lead further through Luke Garbutt’s drive on the hour mark. A short corner kick was played back to Garbutt, who took a touch and fired into the top corner from range to score his second goal in as many home matches.

Blackpool continued to dominate as the match went on, with Peterborough rarely threatening, such was the strength and organisation of the Seasiders backline.

With five minutes remaining, Peterborough did break through and find a goal, with Mo Eisa stabbing home a cross from the left, only for the linesman to flag for offside.

But it was Blackpool's night, and the Seasiders claimed another win to keep momentum going.
