Critchley: A Crazy Night of Football

Neil Critchley was full of praise for his Blackpool team following ‘a crazy night of football’ that saw the Seasiders fight back from two goals down to beat Reading.

On a rain-soaked night in Berkshire, the players didn’t let their heads drop after some early setbacks and instead performed brilliantly to secure another valuable three points in the Sky Bet Championship.

“It was a crazy night of football and a fantastic performance from us for 90-odd minutes, I thought. Even in the first-half, when we were 2-0 down, we were the best team,” Critchley said.

“To come to a team that is in-form – they’ve won five of the last six – and to come back from two goals down to win 3-2 is an incredible feat.

“In the second-half our quality improved and when you’ve got momentum in the game, it’s strange what can happen in football. We thought they would tire, and they did. We passed the ball well, moved them around the pitch well and created some really good opportunities. The football we played tonight was outstanding.”

A big moment in the game came with the introduction of Owen Dale for his Blackpool debut off the bench, with the wide man scoring one and setting up another.

“I’m delighted for Owen because he’s had a frustrating period of time with an injury. He’s been training now for a couple of weeks and had previously played 45 minutes in a behind-closed-doors game. We just felt tonight was a good opportunity for him to come on,” Critchley revealed.

“What Owen has got is personality and the ability to do in the final third what he’s done tonight. He’s scored and got an assist. It was a fantastic cross for Jerry’s goal.”

Given the weather and the long trip for a midweek fixture, Critchley was also thrilled to reward the vocal Blackpool supporters in attendance with a performance that the effort deserved.

“For the supporters to travel here in their numbers on a wretched night like this, I’m so pleased to give them a nice journey home,” he added.
