Johnston: It's Been A Great Month

November was a brilliant month for the academy and particularly the U19 team. Having not lost a single game, John Murphy’s team celebrated the end of the month with a vote for Goal of the Month.

In the end, it was a strike from the team's 4-1 win over Bolton Wanderers at the start of the month that won the vote.

Two goals from striker Johnny Johnston and right back Jack Moore were in the vote, and it was Johnston's wonder strike in Greater Manchester that got the glory.

“First of all, winning Goal of the Month wouldn’t have happened without my teammates. Everyone has been in good form in November. On a personal note I’m very proud to have won.

“Winning this award tops off a great month for me.”

The coaching within an academy is crucial to a player's growth and development, and Johnston recognises the talent from the group that coach him.

“My coaches have been a key part in me winning Goal of the Month. They put in hours of training each week on shooting and different elements. My teammates have also played a massive part. Nothing could have happened without them.

“It was a brilliant counter-attack for the goal and an excellent bit of build-up play from the team and a great assist from Luke Mariette too.

“The counterattack was great, every pass was to perfection. The speed of the attack made the goal very good. Luke’s touch and pass to set me up was beautifully done and with my finish, well I couldn’t miss.”
