Pre-Season Report: Manchester City 4 Blackpool 1
Blackpool signed off their pre-season preparations with a 4-1 loss at Premier League Champions Manchester City on Tuesday evening.
Goals from Sam Edozie, Riyad Mahrez and a Ilkay Gundogan brace was enough for the hosts, despite Luke Garbutt's first-half strike ensuring the two sides were level at the break.
The hosts led with three minutes gone. Youngster Sam Edozie did well to capitalise on a defensive mix-up and bundle the ball past Stuart Moore to give City and early lead at the Academy Stadium.
Blackpool were soaking up a great deal of pressure early on, with Riyad Mahrez's cross from the right just evading everyone's heads and went out for a goal kick.
Despite Manchester City's dominance in possession, Pool were creating chances of their own. A swift counter-attack put Shayne Lavery through on goal, who squared it to Josh Bowler, but the winger's effort went over the goal.
With a little over 15 minutes gone, Blackpool found the equaliser. Shayne Lavery, who was proving to be a problem for the City defence, weaved his way past Joao Cancelo, who - in an effort to catch up - brought the striker down in the penalty area, with the referee blowing for a foul.
Luke Garbutt stepped up and tucked the penalty home into the top left hand corner and the Seasiders were level.
Despite some half-chances for the hosts throughout, they never really tested Stuart Moore again and it was level at the break.
Half-time: Manchester City 1 Blackpool 1
The teams came out for the second half and Manchester City led after just two minutes into the restart. Riyad Mahrez got the better of James Husband on the left and smashed there ball past a despairing Dan Grimshaw to make it 2-1.
City were again keeping vast amounts of the ball and made it 3-1 just before the hour mark. Riyad Mahrez played a lovely quick set piece over the top of Blackpool's backline, with Ilkay Gundogan there to sweep the ball home past Grimshaw.
And Gundogan made it 4-1 to the visitors on 70 minutes. Another ball floated over the top was collected by Callum Connolly in the area. Just before the Blackpool man was about to clear, Gundogan looked to have brought Connolly down, but the referee waived play on and the Manchester City man was able to sweep there ball home to get his second and City's fourth of the match.
At the other end, Tyreece John-Jules had a good effort at goal zip past the far post after come good build-up play from the Seasiders, but that was ultimately it, with City running out 4-1 winners.
