Report: Blackpool 2 Sunderland 3
Sunderland snatched a late win at Bloomfield Road to reach the third round of the Carabao Cup in a 3-2 win.
An Aiden O'Brien hat-trick was enough for the Black Cats, in an end-to-end game which saw Shayne Lavery and Josh Bowler get on the scoresheet for the Seasiders.
Blackpool led after just nine minutes through Shayne Lavery's little poke at goal. Tyreece John-Jules, who was deployed on the left flank and did well to reach the byline and feed a low cross into Lavery in the six yard box, who was simply able to stab it first time into the far corner.
Blackpool's lead didn't last long though, with Sunderland equalising just three minutes later. A cleaver ball forward split the backline open, with Aiden O'Brien latching onto it and slipping the ball calmly past Grimshaw.
It was proving to be an end-to-end half, with both sides testing the goalkeepers. Sunderland found the back of the net on the 30 minute mark, after Alex Pritchard's curling ball in was collected by the oncoming Nathan Broadhead. He controlled it and was able to fire a shot past Dan Grimshaw, but the linesman raised his flag for offside, denying there Black Cats the lead.
At the other end, the impressive Sonny Carey thought he'd found his first Blackpool goal after the ball fell kindly to him in the area after a cross was cleared away. Carey decided to place the ball rather than smash it first time, with the shot blocked on it's way to goal, with that being the last action of the half.

Reece James had a good effort on goal two minutes into the second half. An impressive flick from Shayne livery put Sonny Carey in, who squared the ball to the oncoming Reece James, who's effort went wide of the far post.
Just before the hour mark, the visitors took the lead through Aiden O'Brien. A corner kick was drilled in and found O'Brien at the back post, who chested it down and volleyed at goal. The ball was hit with some power, with Dan Gretarsson diving in the way to block the shot, but the ball fizzed off the top of his head and into the far corner.
Jerry Yates, who had only been on the pitch for a matter of minutes, forced Sunderland's Anthony Patterson into an incredible save on 80 minutes. Yates won the ball on the left, cut in on to his right and fired a shot at the near post. Patterson, who was going the other way, dived to his right and tipped it behind for a corner, which came to nothing.
Josh Bowler, who also impressed after coming on as a late substitute, found the equaliser on 88 minutes. Some lovely build-up play between Bowler and John-Jules, with Bowler passing to his team mate and back again, allowed the former the space to fire at goal past Patterson in front of a boisterous North Stand.
However, it wasn't to be. In the 90th minutes, a cross from the right hand side found Aiden O'Brien at the back post. Despite claims for offside, O'Brien was able to smash past Grimshaw and ensure Sunderland made the third round of the competition.
