Youth Team Report: Morecambe 1 Blackpool 3
The youth team maintained their positive start to the season with a 3-1 win against Morecambe in the Youth Alliance Cup.
Goals from Tayt Trusty, Arnold Matshazi & Prince Yelegon were enough to ensure a good start to the group stage of the Cup despite Louie Lancaster pulling a goal back early in the second half.
It was Trusty’s first game back from injury, with him featuring alongside Luke Mariette in midfield, while Dannen Francis was handed his first start in a tangerine shirt.
It was a dream start for the side when Yelegon was brought down on the edge of the area, winning a free-kick for his side. Tayt Trusty lined the set-piece up, fired towards goal and saw his effort deflect off the wall and spin into the net.
The bright start continued through Dannen Francis after he had a mazy run at the Shrimps defence and managed to get a cross in towards Arnold Matshazi at the near post, with the striker glancing a header wide of the post.
Alec McLachlan did well to keep the young Seasiders ahead, as Ben Jones took a Jamie Nicholson pass down well and went storming through on goal, but the ‘Pool shot-stopper saw off the danger.
Just moments before the break, Matshazi doubled his side’s lead when he turned inside the 18-yard box and skidded a right-footed strike under Joe Lawton.
Half-Time: Morecambe 0 Blackpool 2
The hosts came out for the second half with fire in their belly, and they looked to have pulled a goal back from a corner, but the linesman’s flag was raised for offside.
Adam Mayor was next to bring Morecambe forward. He plucked a Blackpool clearance from the sky and hit a volley inches wide of McLachlan’s post.
Dannen Francis attempted to take the pressure of the ‘Pool defence when he drove inside and hit a low strike towards goal, though Lawton was equal to it.
Despite Francis’s effort, Morecambe still piled on the pressure, and Louie Lancaster made it count, meeting a free-kick at the back post with a well-taken effort.
The Shrimps went looking for an equaliser moments later as Mayor was left free to run at the Blackpool defence and hit a fierce shot at goal - however, McLachlan parried it away to his right.
With all the pressure that the young Seasiders found themselves under, a quick counter-attack saw Luke Mariette pick up a loose pass from Matty Williams and slide Yelegon in on goal, who made no mistake and laced a strike into the bottom corner.
