Blackpool Head Coach Steve Bruce said the team lacked intensity without the ball but was pleased with the second-half reaction at Bloomfield Road.
The Seasiders started slowly in the first-half. Birmingham had the majority of possession, and they were rewarded with a goal just before the break from Ethan Laid.
Then, in the second-half, Birmingham extended their lead thanks to Alfie May. However, the reaction from going behind with the subs made life harder for the visitors.
“I didn't think we had enough intensity without the ball to really get amongst them and disrupt them,” said Bruce
“In the second-half, we were much better at it but made a mistake after five minutes in the second-half, but overall, we were beaten by a better team on the night.”
Following the interval, Blackpool switched to a back three to match the visitors, and Bruce explained the change.
“We just thought, can we go and be a little bit more aggressive against them, playing three in the back, and that allowed us to put three on top and put a bit of pressure on their back,” said Bruce
“They build with a three, I know they're ultimately a back four, but the way they push and lead up the pitch, they create a back three with it. So that's what we tried to do.
“We just tried to match them up a little bit and see what we could do. We were better, that's for sure, but not good enough on the night. “
With one final game to go, Bruce wants to finish the season on a high.
“It is a totally different game on Saturday,” said Bruce
“We've got a prepare and get ready for it. I still want to finish as high as we possibly can, and that might come down to Saturday, so let's see what we can do.”
